Eleven states and the District of Colombia have opened special enrollment periods under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). A special enrollment period is an opportunity to enroll for ACA health insurance outside of the yearly Open Enrollment window.
States with special enrollment periods in response to COVID-19:
California
In response to the coronavirus, Covered California, the state’s health insurance marketplace, has announced that it will extend its special enrollment period until June 30, 2020. The extension is effective immediately.
Colorado
In response to the coronavirus, an emergency special enrollment is now open through April 3, 2020, for uninsured applicants with an April 1, 2020, effective date.
Connecticut
In response to the coronavirus, an emergency special enrollment is now open through April 2, 2020, for uninsured applicants with an April 1, 2020, effective date.
Massachusetts
In response to the coronavirus, an emergency special enrollment is now open through April 25, 2020, for uninsured applicants with an April 1, 2020, or May 1, 2020, effective date.
Maryland
In response to the coronavirus, an emergency special enrollment is now open through April 15, 2020, for uninsured Marylanders to get coverage starting April 1, 2020, only at Maryland Health Connection.
Minnesota
In response to the coronavirus, an emergency special enrollment is now open through April 21, 2020, for uninsured applicants with an April 1, 2020, effective date.
Nevada
In response to the coronavirus, a special enrollment period (SEP) is available from March 17th through April 15th only at Nevada Health Link. Effective date can be April 1, 2020, or May 1, 2020.
New York
In response to the coronavirus, eligible individuals who enroll in Qualified Health Plans through April 15, 2020, will have coverage effective April 1, 2020, or May 1, 2020.
Rhode Island
In response to the coronavirus, a special enrollment period (SEP) is now available through April 15th only at Health Source RI. April 1, 2020, or May 1, 2020, effective date.
Vermont
In response to the coronavirus, an emergency special enrollment is now open through April 17, 2020, for uninsured applicants with an April 1, 2020, or May 1, 2020, effective date.
Washington
In response to the coronavirus, the Washington Health Benefit Exchange announced a limited-time special enrollment period through April 8, 2020, for qualified individuals who are currently without insurance.
District of Colombia
In response to the coronavirus, an emergency special enrollment is now open through June 15, 2020, for uninsured applicants.
